House Keys 4 St. Mary's County

On Tuesday, June 13, 2006, St. Mary's County adopted a local version of a state program to assist local government employees in buying a home for the first time.  The Board of Education of St. Mary's County at the June 28, 2006, meeting passed a resolution endorsing and supporting the program.

The House Keys 4 St. Mary's County Program is a home ownership and mortgage assistance program, matched by the state, to assist eligible employees.  Eligible employees include individuals who work for county government, the library system, St. Mary's County Public Schools, and volunteers of fire, rescue and advanced  life support units.

The program assists eligible county employees in purchasing a home in St. Mary's County by contributing a grant of $2,500 toward down payment and/or closing costs.  Through a combination of county and state funds, eligible county employees could receive up to $12,500 toward the costs of purchasing a home in St. Mary's County.  Grants are limited, so it is suggested that, if you are interested in this program, you should contact Ms. Sue Sabo, Director, St. Mary's County Human Resource Department (301-475-4200, extension 1100).

Smart Housing Initiative 2008

Seeking to alleviate the effects of Southern Maryland's affordable housing shortage, St. Mary's County is offering subsidized rental homes to a handful of first-year teachers.

Ten townhouses in California’s Hickory Hills East subdivision will be provided to new teachers at a 12 percent discount from the usual monthly rent. First-year teachers will be able to enter a lottery for the units, which range from studios to two-bedrooms.

The St. Mary's Affordable Rents for Teachers program, a partnership with Great Mills-based developer Liberty Home Builder, also offers a rent-to-own option that will allow teachers to apply a portion of their monthly rent to a down payment on a unit in the housing development. In exchange, teachers will agree to offer tutoring services or other community activities for their neighbors for at least 12 hours each year.

Under the arrangement, a studio apartment that normally rents for $696 per month will be reduced to around $612. A one-bedroom, one-bath that costs $927 per month will be available for around $760. A two-bedroom, 1.5-bath that costs $1,035 per month will be available to teachers selected in the lottery for about $931, which could be split between two teachers.
