Substitute teachers are hired to teach students in the absence of a teacher, on a daily or long-term basis. Preferred applicants have had some experience in working with children. Substitute employees are paid every two weeks during the school year, based upon the number of days worked. A substitute employee (paraeducator, secretary or teacher) without a bachelor's degree is paid $55 per day and a substitute employee (paraeducator, secretary or teacher) with a degree is paid $65 per day. A substitute teacher who is a retiree from SMCPS or within the state of Maryland is paid $75 per day. As a substitute, you can:

Substitute teacher applicants are required to take the Substitute Teacher Training Course offered through St. Mary’s County Public Schools. There is no fee for the course. The course is currently being offered monthly and is subject to change. St. Mary's County Public Schools requires all employees to have a full background check including state and FBI.
The schedule below reflects the 2009-2010 Substitute Employee Training Class Schedule. Each Substitute Employee Training Class will involve two full day sessions. A Proficiency Screening Examination is a mandatory requirement prior to registration. All interested persons, please call 301-475-5511, ext. 189 to schedule a Proficiency Screening Examinnation to complete your requirement for registration for the Substitute Employee Training Class.
Applicants must adhere to the following:
- Applicants must apply in person.
- Applicants must be 18 years of age.
- Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.
- Applicants are required to bring a social security card, passport, or birth certificate, and a driver’s license.
- Failure to report on time and have appropriate processing information may result in applicant being placed on a waiting list for that month’s classes.

Essential Job Functions of Substitute Teachers
- Assumes all duties and responsibilities of the regular teacher in a given day. Long-term substitutes may also be required to attend staff meetings, parent conferences, etc.
- Maintains effective working relationships with other employees and the public and deals with the public relations problems courteously and tactfully.
- Carries out written plans left by the regular teacher for the day's lessons and routines. Marks pupil assignments and classroom work according to school and teacher evaluation policies.
- Records pupil absences according to school procedures.
- Assumes the teacher's responsibility for supervision of students in the building, on the grounds, or on field trips.
- Becomes familiar with and follows school and division procedures for routines and emergencies.
- Leaves a clear, written summary for the teacher of the work covered and other relevant comments.
- During planning period, performs duties as requested by teacher or school administrator.
- Maintains confidentiality at all times: in classroom, school site, administrative buildings and in the community.
