St. Mary's County Public Schools believes in the importance of mentors for new teachers. The Department of Professional and Organizational Development in collaboration with Human Resources, provides formal orientation and on-going development for all new teacher mentors. Mentors have many opportunities to participate in professional development workshops and dialogue groups. Opportunities for reflection and self-evaluation are key to the mentor training.
Mentoring in SMCPS involves experienced teachers paired with novice teachers, providing coaching, support, and guidance as the new teachers transition in their first two years.
Mentoring is a key component of our long-range Teacher Induction Program
Mentor Meetings:
- Meetings are scheduled twice per year for mentors, in the fall and winter, and mentors participate in the new teacher spring re-energizer.
